Biggest win at Victoria Park
Needing to win to keep their finals chances alive, Melbourne won with a performance John Northey rated as a five or six at best. The Magpies were disappointing and only managed to hold on through the first quarter before Melbourne kicked away to their biggest ever win at the ground.
The match started with a dust-up before the first bounce, where Melbourne's late 80s nemesis Brian Taylor was reported. Melbourne then went on to pepper the sticks but only managed 1.7 with a handful more out of bounds.
Melbourne were dominant though. Steve O'Dwyer was winning the ruck easily, the backline were holding strong and both Graeme Yeats and Robert Flower were a touch of class on the wing and up forward respectively. From quarter time the Demons kicked 14.17 to 6.6 to win comfortably and keep their season alive for another week.
John Northey rated the performance as a five or six at best, saying “we would want to play better than we did today to make the finals”.
Best were Yeats, Lyon and Wight. Two Collingwood players were reported and suspended for striking Jim Stynes in the same incident.
