Melbourne win by 2 points
A second thriller in a row, but this time the Demons were on the right side when the final bell rang for their first win in fourteen matches.
They were forced to come from behind but received a leg up from the Saints who inexplicably switched from the fast, open football they'd played in the first three terms to a slow, defensive game in the last. The change in philosophy allowed Melbourne's talls to take over and keep the ball in attack for nearly the whole quarter.
Scores level at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter, two behinds put the Demons in front before St Kilda goalled. Noel Clarke was thrown into the centre despite having kicked four goals already and he drove his side inside 50 where they kicked four straight points to hit the front and win.
Less than a goal had separated the two sides for the last twenty minutes of the game, and including the four points they had kicked to take the lead they booted the last nine behinds of the game.
Arnold, McGivern and Albiston were Melbourne's best.
