After a rocky start to their premiership defence the Demons went close to a second upset in a row as they were forced to battle right to the end of the game to take the four points off South. They were the better side but couldn't consistently beat the home defenders.

Having led a close game all day Melbourne suddenly found themselves nine points behind with eight minutes to play when South kicked two in a row, but their experience helped them steady and boot two of their own to win after South's best defender had been moved onto the ball in the dying minutes.

Best were La Fontaine, Mueller and O'Keefe. Ellis was 19th man.
