Carlton started favourites, but their over-confidence cost them early in the game and Melbourne kicked three goals in a row before the Blues sparked and got back in front by a point at the first change. The home side got the first goal of the second quarter, but from there Carlton dominated the play, kicking five goals in a row.
Four goals down at the start of the third quarter Melbourne dug in and won the second half by a goal but couldn't get close enough to cause their opponents any worries.
Best were Wright, Mills and McCart.
