The home side were immediately on the attack from the first bounce, keeping Melbourne's defenders busy before kicking the first goal. Melbourne replied, and the teams went goal for goal until the end of the quarter where the bell interrupted another Redleg attack.

South kicked the first goal of the second quarter as well, and for the second time Melbourne responded almost immediately. For the second time in a row they went on to lose the quarter by a goal. The Reds won a term at last in the third, kicking three goals to one. The margin was down to two points before South kicked a goal late in the term.

The score was level deep into the last quarter until South won the game with a late goal. After Harry Purse kicked from directly in front at close range and hit the behind post for no score, Jack Gardiner levelled the scores. Melbourne went forward again, but gave away three consecutive free kicks that transferred the ball to South's end and they scored the winning goal with three minutes play. Melbourne had a final attacking effort but there was no further score.

Peacock broke a finger in the first quarter of his first game.
