Melbourne's third win of the season came largely because of their biggest first quarter lead since Round 2, 1994, as the hapless Suns were pulverised.
The Demons kicked the first of the second quarter within a minute and it looked like a rout was on the cards. Gold Coast steadied and nearly won the total score for the rest of the game despite being reduced to zero fully fit players on the bench by the last quarter.
The Suns dominated inside 50 and contested possessions for the rest of the game, but with Brad Green proving a handy forward his goals were the difference as the Demons capitalised on their early lead to win comfortably but not impressively.
Best were Howe, Jones and Tapscott.
James Magner was a late replacement for Jordie McKenzie, and was substituted into the game in the second quarter when Cale Morton suffered a shoulder injury.
