Melbourne's second biggest ever loss and biggest against Geelong and at Kardinia Park cost coach Dean Bailey his job. The coach entered the weekend with the media suggeting he was about to win a contract extension, but after his side were thrashed by the near record margin - including the second highest half time and full time margin in league history - Bailey was sacked the next day and replaced by Todd Viney for the rest of the season.
Matthew Bate replaced Brent Moloney at the start of the third quarter. Moloney had started the game ill and failed to have a possession.
'Best' were McKenzie, Howe and Dunn.
