A win before the bye had reignited Melbourne's hopes of a finals run, and they were lucky to keep the momentum up by running into an Essendon side low on confidence and wracked by injuries.

Matthew Febey gave the Demons a great start with three goals in the first 13 minutes, Garry Lyon stepped up at full-forward in the absence of Allen Jakovich, and David Schwarz played a great game at Centre Half-Forward.

The half time lead was 17, before eight straight goals in the third quarter put the injury hit Bombers away in Melbourne's biggest win over them since 1937. It was their first triple figure score against Essendon since 1972, kicking four more goals in the last term to two points.

Best were Lyon, Schwarz and S. Febey. Matthew Febey injured his shoulder in the third quarter.
