With their season already over the Demons travelled down the highway looking for respect and got it with a comfortably win in what Cats coach Bill McMaster described as his side's "worst game in 20 years". Geelong were two games lower on the ladder and their performance justified the gap between the two sides.
Melbourne were only one spot above Geelong but for three quarters diced them up like they were at opposite ends of the table. At half time they were ten goals in front and had extended the lead to almost a hundred points at the last change. Only the Demons putting their feet up in the last quarter allowed the Cats some respectability and seven goals.
Best were Wells, Callery and Parke. Ray Biffin was reported for striking but found not guilty. Bourke (bruised arm) was replaced by Yeo and Davis (eye) was replaced by Williamson, both in the last quarter.
