In a rare non-Queen's Birthday game, Melbourne took advantage of Collingwood's poor form to register their first win against the Magpies since 2007.
The Demons got off to a fast start, registering four goals to one in the first quarter. Collingwood launched a comeback during the second term, but Melbourne steadied and held the momentum until last in the third quarter. With several Demons looking tired the Pies kicked two late goals to cut the margin.
With their season on the line, Collingwood fell apart in the last quarter and a resurgent Melbourne side ran away to an easy victory.
Best were Vince, Watts and Viney. James Harmes replaced Viv Michie during the third quarter. Nathan Jones was fined $1000 for wrestling at half time.
