Melbourne missed another golden opportunity to firm up their spot in the eight, ending the first quarter against Essendon 20 points behind. They never recovered, and were left on the verge of falling out of the finals race.
Sean Wight conceded 21 centimetres to Paul Salmon, and was moved off him after conceding 3.2 by midway through the second quarter. Salmon was restricted to one further goal before injuring his ankle late in the game but the damage had been done, other than a brief period in the third quarter the Demons never got closer than four goals. Despite driving rain, Essendon's talls controlled the game. Peter Somerville comfortably beat Jim Stynes in the ruck, and Steven Alessio kicked four goals.
Best were Seecamp, B. Lovett and Smith. Neil Balme said, "They jumped us a bit. We didn't have the initiative early and didn't recover it all day".
