In shocking conditions Carlton proved too strong for the struggling Demons who were already carrying one of the worst records in the league at VFL Park before the match began.
Not yet fully out of wooden spoon calculations, and with coach Bob Skilton a lame duck who had already announced he was leaving at the end of the year, the Demons were confronted with a terrible paddock to play in and played terrible paddock football to match. They were without system, will to win and skills. Carlton should have won by much more.
17-year-old Ken Sheldon kicked six for the winners and another teenager, Michael Young had 26 kicks. Carlton had played three games in ten days - and had another on the Tuesday night - but showed no signs of fatigue as they waltzed away to victory with barely a whimper from their opponents.
Best were Grambeau, Sullivan and Coles. Davis was replaced by Graham in the first quarter, who was then replaced by Johnston in the third quarter.
