Norm Smith returned to coach the Demons after his heart scare and his team served up another thriller to welcome him back.
In muddy, difficult conditions Fitzroy controlled the play for most of the day but found themselves just three points in front with four minutes to go. It took a free kick to ruckman David Sykes in front of goals to steady the Lions and let them go on to win.
Fitzroy won the free kick count 45 to 30, a result that didn't escape the Demons match committee after the game.
Best were Alves, Mann and Townsend. Anderson (strained knee) was replaced by Leahy in the first quarter. Bowden (strained knee) was replaced by Vagg in the third quarter.
