Melbourne had got their faltering season back on track with a win over Fitzroy the previous week, and when they were 16 points in front 15 minutes into the last quarter it looked like they were going to win again - then the Cats slammed on 7.5 to a point to win comfortably.

The Cats handed Melbourne their eighth loss in 10 games, but it could have been different in both Andy Lovell and Sean Charles hadn't hit the post in the last quarter.

The Demons had been forced to come from behind after the first half, with Gary Ablett kicking four goals in the first quarter before being reasonably well held for the rest of the day. He cropped up for another three as the Cats ran away with the game, but despite kicking 10.3 for the day was beaten to three Brownlow Votes by Michael Mansfield who had 19 touches and 1 goal.

Peter Rohde failed to have a possession for the whole game.

Best were Schwarz, Tingay and M. Febey. Graeme Yeats was replaced in the selected side by Rod Grinter due to flu.
