Geelong were struggling for a second season in a row since they had re-entered the league, and provided a handy victim for Melbourne to rack up a comfortable victory. The home side were lucky enough to have their captain Jack Butcher playing, but only because two weeks earlier he had been treated for injury by Demon Dr. Donald Cordner.
Melbourne kicked the first three goals of the game within 10 minutes, and were five to one in front before Geelong rallied and cut the gap to six points at the first break. The scores were soon level early in the second quarter. After the Demon defence turned back a pair of Geelong attacks to keep the scores equal, they rallied with two goals and took an 11 point lead into the long break.
The sides traded goals in the third quarter, before Melbourne kicked away at the end through two quick goals to Mitchell. From a 21 point gap at three-quarter time the Demons piled on seven goals to seven points to win easily. One Geelong fan was so enraged he assaulted field umpire Thomas, later being fined 2p.
Best were Cordner, Porter and Smith. R. Kennedy replaced Newman (injured shoulder) in the third quarter.
