Despite having their finals spot almost certainly sewn up Melbourne were still shocked by North in what was the Shinboners first ever VFL win over the league's oldest club.
Just two weeks out from the finals was the worst time to suffer a bad result, and a loss to Richmond in the last game could see them miss out on the top four entirely, much less the top two which they'd been fighting to be a part of just weeks earlier.
North jumped to an early lead and Melbourne never threatened again.
Thomas, Corbett and Deane were Melbourne's best.
