What slim hopes Melbourne had of making the four after suffering two losses by under a goal in a row were completely destroyed when they were bested by Essendon at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The match was uninspired in the first quarter, and Essendon gradually pulled away with their superior marking and running. With their season on the line the Reds gave one last push in the final term but fell short.
With so much on the line it wasn't surprising that there were some spiteful incidents during the match which were missed by the umpires.
Harry Brereton managed two goals despite playing ill, but Cope missed the game after suffering an accident at work from a jet of steam.
