With three games to go both Richmond and Melbourne were comfortably clear of the bottom two and playing for nothing other than mid-table mediocrity. In a see-sawing game Melbourne ended up coming out on top despite missing two regulars in Pearce and Fairbairn.

The game never hit any great standards but handballed too much on a day where long kicking would have been the far better tactic. The two sides were even at the end of the first quarter before Richmond took the lead during the second. When they had their chance with the breeze in the third Melbourne retook the advantage and took their opportunities in front of goal.

Richmond should have done better with the use of the wind but they lacked the stamina on a heavy ground. They kicked the first goal of the quarter to take the lead, before Melbourne booted two in a row to win.

Best were Hickey, McKenzie and Tompkins. Robertson was injured.
