Melbourne failed to make early dominance count against the lowly Saints, and the visitors' speed off half-back continually set up opportunities for their forwards. The margin blew out to 20 points late in the last quarter before three goals in the last five minutes left the Demons with a chance of a miracle victory. With 26 seconds on the clock they failed to score again and suffered a surprise defeat.
