With their finals hopes hanging in the balance after a pounding at the hands of Essendon in Round 14, 1984 Melbourne needed their first victory against North in eight years to get back into the mix. North, playing a disappointing season, seemingly put the cue in the rack for the first time in season 1984, and without both Wayne Schimmelbusch and Ross Glendinning they were always going to be behind the eight ball with their inexperienced side.
Conditions were heavy, but not wet enough to slow the Demon runners.
Neither side scored for 12 minutes, but once Melbourne got going they were rarely threatened again. North drew to within three goals at various stages they didn't have the firepower to overhaul the Demons.
Best were Yeats, Williams and Moore.
