After losing a battle for second to North Melbourne a week earlier the Demons travelled to Geelong, where they hadn't won since 1946 to take on a side desperately trying to scramble into the four.
With the side desperate for a full-forward Jack Mueller returned to the side for the first time in 1950 and kicked five goals, but it wasn't enough as he was too often left to do all the work on his own. Despite Mueller's successful comeback and stirling ruck play from Denis and Don Cordner, the Demons were unable to take advantage and suffered defeat.
Despite poor weather the game was played at a high standard. Melbourne had their chances, and despite the Cats winning handily in the centre of the ground the visitors had several opportunities to run away with the game. They failed to take them and the better stamina of the visitors allowed them to run over the top and win in the last term. Melbourne had tried hard to delay the start of the last quarter, with Denis Cordner and Shane McGrath both calling for a change of boots, and the team sitting down until ordered to resume by the field umpire.
Best were Arnold, Don Cordner and Denis Cordner. 19/20 man was chosen from Thompson, Pound and Heywood.
