The Demons travelled to Carrara for their last interstate trip of the year wary of the Bears, who had beaten them in their last meeting at the ground in Round 5, 1987.

John Northey, describing Carrara as his least favourite interstate trip said "It's not just the conditions, the weather and the atmosphere - the ground finds everybody out. It's such a big ground and is difficult with the humidity". Even the fact that the Bears were second last on the ladder with a 3-11 record wasn't comforting him.

They got the job done though with a minimum of fuss. A blistering first half saw them take a 59 point led into the long break, and even when the Bears kicked five goals in a row early in the last quarter they had the reserves to hit back. The Bears challenged again, but they weren't close enough.

It could have been different if they'd kicked better in the third quarter, Brad Hardie had 0.5 and two out on the full in his 100th game. Alex Ischenko returned for five kicks and a report.

It was Melbourne's eighth win of the season by less than 15 points.

Stretch, Johnson, Lyon and Wilson were best. Alex Ischenko was reported for striking Garry Lyon and suspended for four matches.
