In a week where Monash University students were in the news for stealing St Kilda's 1966 premiership cup, the Saints put themselves in the frame to make the finals, and at least have a chance to repeat, with a win over the Demons. The loss put Melbourne all but out of contention and extended their streak without a finals appearance to three years.

The Saints were in no mood to give favours and restricted the Demons to just ten points at half time, and 25 at the last change. 46 points in front at the final break they took their foot off the gas and let Melbourne kick five consolation goals in the last quarter but in reality it was a poor match was both sides.

Brian Dixon gave the umpires a headache when he flew for a mark and caught the ball between his legs as he hit the ground. The umpire waved play-on.

Best were Davis, Mann and Emselle. Alves (bruised cheek) was replaced by Sullivan in the last quarter.
