Struggling Carlton almost caused the upset of the season, leading by seven points at the last change, and kicking the first goal of the final term before Melbourne ran over the top to record another win on the road to an 11th consecutive finals appearance.
Melbourne’s stars dragged them over the line. Adams and Dixon had been far from prominent on the wings all day, but provided the drive to get their side back in the game. Their work helped Barassi and Mann set up opportunities, and Ray Groom kicked two goals. It made Carlton pay for only turning their third quarter domination into three goals.
Melbourne remained a win and 23% clear of second placed Geelong on the ladder.
Wise suffered a broken nose that bled heavily throughout the game and had to be reset at the end of every quarter. Reserves Davis and Watson were not used.
Best were Kenneally, H. Mann and Barassi
