Melbourne welcomed their fellow cellar-dwellars to the MCG, having already lost to them once during the season, and earned their fourth and final win of the season. Hawthorn had never won on the MCG, but they went closer than they ever had before to breaking the duck.
The home side started quickly, and kicked six goal straight to open the match. They maintained a narrow lead throughout the day before Hawthorn made a comeback in the last quarter.
In the end accurate kicking for goal was the difference between the two sides, giving them breathing space when the visitors came back at them in the final term. Hawthorn won in the air and the rucks, but Melbourne matched them by being quicker and playing their positions better.
Two quick goals and a sudden superiority in the ruck and across the middle of the ground helped the Mayblooms sneak in front during the last quarter, but in a frantic few minutes where the match turned rough Francis Vine defused two dangerous attacks and Melbourne snuck forward for a Margitich goal which won them the game.
Hawthorn might have still won the game, but missed from a free kick shortly before the final bell.
Best were Deague, Warne-Smith and Margitich. Vanthoff suffered an injured jaw in the last quarter and was replaced by Wyn Murray.
The win kept Melbourne a game and percentage away from the dreaded wooden spoon.
