A greatly weakened Melbourne side had delivered a surprise thumping victory over South Melbourne the previous Saturday afternoon but their greatly weakened lineup couldn't repeat the dose against 9th placed Fitzroy and all of a sudden the defending premiers were a game out of the top four.

The Maroons' lead at quarter time was built on using the wind to their advantage, so it was expected that Melbourne would put it to work in their favour and take the lead by half time. They did anything but, conceding five and going into the second half 37 points behind.

The visitors were dominant in the second half, but any chance they had of overturning the margin were ruined by poor kicking on goals. In each of the last two quarters they booted 3.5, when just a few more straight kicks might have put them in a winning position.

White, Latham and McConville were Melbourne's best.
