With the game having little bearing on the makeup of the sectional rounds - the two clubs would end up playing each other again the next week - Melbourne took to the match easily and were without seven or eight of their best players. As a consequence Geelong weren't extended and won easily.

On a day where players from both sides found a bad ball hard to kick accurately, Melbourne failed to score a point in the first quarter, the first time they had suffered this fate since behinds were introduced to scoring in 1897, and while they only managed a point for the first half Geelong could have been further in front if they had played with better system. The visitors' cause was also helped by defender Wood being the best man on ground and holding his side's backline together.

Best were Wood, L. Ripon and H. Ripon. Mitchell suffered a strained leg late in the game.
