An inaccurate Melbourne had to recover from a three goal deficit in the first quarter, but slowly worked their way back into the game before taking the lead in the third quarter. They built a seemingly impenetrable 19 point lead late in the last term, but had to withstand a late burst by the Pies. Two goals in the final minute left the margin less than one straight kick with 30 seconds left. The Demons survived the centre bounce and held on to win the first 'King's Birthday' game of the reign of King Charles III, and their first holiday Monday win over the Pies since 2017.
Best were Viney (who also won the Neale Daniher trophy for best on ground), May and Fritsch. James Jordon replaced Charlie Spargo in the third quarter. Christian Salem was fined $3000 for striking.
