The match was rescheduled from the MCG to Sydney due to COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria. During the week Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley announced he would retire after the match, and his 16th placed side upset the league leaders.
A five goal second quarter gave the Pies a 16 point lead at half time, before Melbourne struck back to cut the lead to five points at the last change. They were unable to reel in the gap and went down to an upset defeat.
Best were Petracca, Jackson and Oliver. Kade Chandler was unused medical substitute.
