After a shaky middle of the season, Melbourne had started a revival with a win over Collingwood and a narrow loss to the defending (and eventual) premiers. Victory over the Crows kept them in the race for the eight, but it would ultimately be their final win of the season.

Darren Jarman played a lone hand up front for the Crows kicking 9.0 - the most ever kicked by a Crow in a losing side to that point - but Adelaide's other key playmakers were put right out of the game by Melbourne's desperation. Jarman's first three goals in the opening quarter came to give his side the lead after David Schwarz had kicked three of his own. Melbourne had been the better side throughout the quarter but went in 10 points behind.

The home side's next burst came at the start of the second quarter, when Adem Yze kicked the opening goal and David Neitz added two in the next five minutes. Again, Jarman was his side's spark but on top of his next two goals his teammates missed a number of opportunities to further improve his side's position and the Crows went in narrowly behind.

Melbourne started the third term like the second, with a goal to Brent Grgic after a minute, another to David Schwarz immediately after and another to Andrew Leoncelli that extended the lead to 22. Adelaide had one last tilt in them, cutting the gap to four points. After seven goals, Marcus Seecamp was moved off Jarman and Grgic given his chance, conceding a further two goals. With a wider spread of goalkickers the Demons put on six for the quarter to set up a 17 point lead at the last change.

A pair of attacks were turned back by strong Scott Chisholm tackles, and two goals in reply settled the result. Adelaide got two consolations late but the game was already won.

Best were Schwarz, Johnstone and Neitz. Jeff White broke his nose. Mark Bickley was suspended for one match for striking Ben Beams.

Neale Daniher said: "Today was a good, hard-fought sort of win. We didn't do everything as slick and nice as we liked but I thought the boys really put in and we got away for a good solid win".
