With just two wins out of twelve since the jubilant scenes that followed the Round 1 victory over Footscray the Demons were already also-rans in 1979, so it was no surprise that finals contenders Geelong had a comfortable win in muddy conditions at league headquarters.
According to The Age one Melbourne fan was spotted packing up his rug and coffee flask and walking out in disgust before half time. If he had listened to the third quarter on the way home he might not have managed to stay on the road as Geelong booted five goals to two to put the result beyond doubt. He missed his side kicking an unusual six goals without a miss to three quarter time.
Robert Flower, Tony Sullivan and Kelly O'Donnell were named as Melbourne's best in an otherwise forgettable day. Peter Giles suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter.
Their third loss in a row left Melbourne sitting just a win and percentage above last placed St Kilda. Carl Ditterich was left with just under half a season to rescue his side from another wooden spoon battle, one which cost his predecessor Denis Jones his job after 1978.
