A clash between the league's two bottom sides drew a tiny crowd to Carrara, the lowest for a Melbourne game in the 1990s. The few Bears fans who turned up saw their side pull off an upset, leaving them level with the Demons on 'match ratio', but still in last place due to poor percentage.

Despite their lowly position on the ladder Melbourne started as favourites, but conceded seven first quarter goals that left them chasing a 16 point deficit. They did even better in the second term, extending the margin to 34 at half time. The Demons threatened early in the third term, then again when they kicked the last three goals of the quarter, before a rocket from Bears coach Robert Walls focused his side and they won easily.

It was the first time Brisbane had kicked 100 points in a game for nearly a year, and their first win over Melbourne since 1987.

Best were Lovell, Viney and Yeats. Greg Healy (hamstring) and Michael Pickering (foot) were lost before half-time, forcing Jim Stynes to play with a back injury from 20 minutes into the third quarter.
