Vastly outmatched against the Blues, Melbourne battled manfully all day to contain the damage to a five goal loss.

The Demons stuck with their opponents for much of the day, and dominated in the rucks but the problem was the age old lack of a key forward to kick goals from the football won by midfielders like Flower, Alves and Wells.

Best were Wells, Hardeman and Baker. Tony Sullivan (bruised thigh) was replaced by Ditterich at half time. Collins was an unused reserve. Alves bruised his knee and back, Keenan bruised his thigh.
