Melbourne started underdogs at Waverley, and not without some justification having lost 5 games in a row. Despite having beaten the Swans in Round 1 the Demons fortunes had turned for the worst and South led at every change.
The Demons had trailed narrowly at every change, but Norm Smith's speech to his troops at three quarter time inspired them to streak to a five goal lead early in the last.
It was then that the Demons sprung back into action with five straight goals of their own, including four to Ross Dillon but they ran out of time and lost the four points.
Best for the Demons were Sullivan, Davis and Dillon. Rollinson (groin) was replaced by Colcott in the last quarter. Debutante Lloyd Burgmann was an unused reserve.
