With new signing Kerry Ryan finally in the side after a lengthy clearance row with the VFA he was instantly thrown to full-forward, the ninth man to take up the role in the first 11 games of the season. He goalled with his first kick but did not play VFL football again.

At quarter time it looked as if the new lineup, sporting another league debutant in John Murnane and the recycled Lion Tony Hirst was capable of an upset against a Cats side sitting on the edge of the top four. The Demons kept their visitors goalless in the first term. As it so often did that year the match swung around in the second quarter and Geelong slammed on 6.6 to 3.3 to take a lead into the sheds at half-time.

Geelong were so keen to get on with the game in the third quarter that they were out on the field before the umpires. Melbourne on the other hand had to be summoned from the rooms by umpire Sheales to get on with the game. Whatever Norm Smith was saying to his troops obviously worked, because within ten minutes of the restart they had booted four goals and stolen the lead.

They could have been even further in front had it not been for woeful kicking to register 4.8 for the term, and the wasted chances gave Geelong an opportunity to regroup and kick two goals to take the lead into the last term.

The last quarter was a tense arm wrestle, but once again it was the Demons who kicked themselves out of the game with 0.6 which allowed Geelong to kick away late in the quarter. The inaccuracy prompted Norm Smith to put his forwards through extra goalkicking practice during the week.

Best were Mann, Johnson and Emselle. Reserves were new players Hirst and Murnane but neither were used.
