Second on the ladder, but engaged in a tight race for finals spots, the Demons went to a ground where they usually played poorly and pulled off a morale-boosting victory that kept them inside the four, and in contention for a top two finish.
Hawthorn had every chance to win, but spoiled their day with poor forward work and bad kicking for goal - at one stage John Peck had 1.6. They were also wasteful by hand, while at the other end fill-in full forward Laurie Mithen kicked 5.4.
The visitors jumped to a surprise lead, four goals in front at quarter time. Hawthorn rallied in the second and cut the gap to eight but gave the advantage away again in the third by conceding five goals to one. The Hawks made another rally in the last term, but only after the game was already won.
The result left Melbourne in second, level on points but 12% behind Essendon.
Mithen, Gleeson and Lord were best. Jones and Dawson were reserves.
