In a poor match it was St Kilda's poor kicking for goal which cost them victory. They weren't helped by a stiff breeze or a number of umpiring decisions which caused their fans to boo umpire Beitzel off after the game. The Saints took a handy lead into quarter time, but their inaccuracy allowed Melbourne to steady and boot 6.3 to 1.4 with the wind in the second term to to lead comfortably at the half. The Saints struck back with the breeze in the third to take a lead into the last break.

Despite being outplayed in all the key positions, the Demons got the win because they were steadier in the last quarter as they kicked 3.3 to a solitary point. They had also been helped with a crucial win by Shane McGrath in battles with full-forward Peter Bennett. Bennett only got two goals for the day, and one was while McGrath was in the hands of trainers.

St Kilda had blown what seemed to be their last chance of finishing in the top four but the victory nearly assured Melbourne of finishing in the four. It continued a losing streak for the Saints against Melbourne stretching back to 1945.

It was Melbourne's worst performance of the season, but in the context of the year four points were crucial.

Best were McMahen, McGrath and Rule. Len Dockett was a late withdrawal with a thigh injury.
