After being thrashed by Fremantle a week earlier the Demons held top of the table Hawthorn relatively well in the first quarter, but the fact that the Hawks had 12 scoring shots showed that it was more their waste than anything which kept Melbourne close.
Hawthorn showed their class in the second quarter, kicking nine goals to Melbourne's solitary major for the first half midway through the term from Jeremy Howe to open up a match winning lead.
For the second week in a row Melbourne won the third term after being battered in the first two, but Hawthorn took control again in the last and kicked the first seven goals to increase the margin to over 100 points before a Michael Evans goal at the 28 minute mark saved the Demons from a triple figure defeat.
Best were Dawes, N. Jones and Frawley. Matt Jones was replaced by Luke Tapscott in the third quarter. Frawley suffered a hamstring injury.
