The Demons Kardinia Park hoodoo continued against a side who had lost four games in a row and blown a 40 point lead the week before. With David Neitz forced into the backline again, Tom Harley and Kent Kingsley shared the first four goals between them and the Demons didn't get on the board until the second quarter.
It took until halfway through the second term for Melbourne to spark, but when they did goals to Russell Robertson, Travis Johnstone and David Schwarz cut the margin to under a straight kick at the long break. That was almost all the excitement for travelling fans, with only one goal kicked in the third quarter and a forward line misfiring so badly that Alistair Nicholson was forced to go forward and kick two rare goals.
Nathan Brown quelled the dangerous Ronnie Burns, while Jeff White and Darren Jolly were good in the ruck and Johnstone continued his improvement in the midfield.
Neale Daniher said "I didn't think, other than a little bit of flurry in the second quarter, there was much to get excited about today. We started poorly, we knew they started well down here and our first quarter wasn't great."
