Melbourne win by 58 points

Goalkickers: Glenn Swan 8, John Tilbrook 6, Stan Alves 2, Ross Brewer 1, Robert Flower 1, Graham Osborne 1, Greg Wells 1

Milestones:
First game and first goal
Robert Flower

A huge win for the Demons was built on the form of two youngsters. Robert Flower debuted with a bang, and Glenn Swann kicked 8 goals in just his 5th game, and second career match at full-forward. He had just one goal in his first four games.

Having watched inept and lifeless forward lines for many years Demons fans were in raptures with Swan's performance. He had played poorly in a winning side the week before, but the selectors faith in him was repaid.

Greg Wells had 44 possessions, while John Tilbrook was also potent with six goals from a half-forward flank. Stan Alves kicked two goals and set up Swan on numerous occasions. The new full-forward booted five in the third quarter as the Demons piled on five in eight minutes to blow the Cats away.

Flower would go on to be one of the champions of the game while Swan kicked 21 goals in 13 games in 1973 then never played another senior game.

Best were Wells, Tilbrook and Swan. Bourke (bruised knee) was replaced by Leary at three-quarter time. Henry Ritterman was an unused reserve.
