Some suggested that the league's best side would struggle to win in Geelong without Tassie Johnson and Ron Barassi, but Melbourne stood strong and further consolidated their position as premiership favourites. They were also missing ruckman Bob Johnson on doctor's orders, but ran away to a big lead at quarter time and were never challenged.
It didn't hurt that they made use of their opportunities while Geelong burned theirs, missing too many short kicks, handballs and long kicking inaccurately to its forwards. Only Geelong's defence stopped them from registering a huge score, repulsing attacks time after time but falling victim to the weight of numbers.
After the match the Demons had a week off as part of the league's split round for the interstate games.
Best were Ridley, Lord and Mithen. Lord and Ridley were replaced by Massey and Pinfold in the last quarter.
