The Demons entered the first match of the season touted as one of Victoria's greatest hopes for a flag. After three straight finals appearances it seemed that 2007 was going to be their year. When Matthew Whelan ironed out Luke Ball with a big hit early in the first term, and the Demons took a lead into quarter time Melbourne fans were in heaven but worrying signs soon started.
Brock McLean, touted as an outsider for the Brownlow Medal, broke his foot late in the first quarter and by half-time St. Kilda had hit the lead. They kept Melbourne goalless in the third term and went on to win comfortably.
Best were Neitz, McDonald and Jones.
