Drafted by North Melbourne with pick 6 in the 1992 draft after winning the Eagles' B&F in the SANFL and playing for South Australia, Pyman played finals in his first year but managed just 16 games in total over three years. North was later fined $10,000 for breaching draft rules to sign him.

He crossed to Collingwood and again struggled, only playing five5 games in 1996 before landing at Melbourne the next season. He had a good first half of 1997 before going missing in the latter part of the season. He finished 6th in the Best and Fairest but was delisted and joined Woodville-West Torrens in 1998. He was their leading goalkicker that season before returning to Melbourne to work as Communications Manager for Collingwood.

Pyman later had a stint as assistant to Dean Laidley at North before coaching South Adelaide from 2004 to 2007 when he was sacked during the season. After a short stint by ex-Port Adelaide coach Jack Cahill, Pyman was replaced by former Demon Clay Sampson.
