The brother of Essendon's Brian Sampson, the ruckman signed for the Demons in 1966 and was put on a "gymnastic course" to build him up for "next season".
He played Reserves until 1969, and then only appeared in one senior game. The next year he joined Sandringham where he played 46 games between 1970 and 1974.
