The ongoing COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria meant Melbourne had to play their first Qualifying Final since 2000 interstate. They chose the Adelaide Oval, registering their first ever interstate finals victory. Due to the unusual location, it was the lowest finals crowd the club had played in front of since 1902.
Fourth placed Brisbane challenged early, forcing the Demons into a higher scoring first quarter than their defence-first game style was used to. Melbourne continued the scoring in the second, adding another five goals, while their backline held the Lions to one. It set up a match-winning lead, held goalless in the third term they only conceded two goals and Brisbane never closer than 19 points.
Victory earned the Demons a week off, earning a direct path to the Preliminary Final. James Jordon was unused medical substitute.
Best were Oliver, Petracca and Viney.
