Queens Counsel who conducted the Demons internal investigation into their 1990s salary cap breaches. He was seconded to the board in 1999 and had his election confirmed at that year's AGM.

Despite being brought to the club by Joseph Gutnick, and originally acting as Gutnick's legal counsel, Hayes defended the club against Gutnick's attempts to win an injunction which would have halted a meeting intended to sack him as President. Hayes then ran against Gutnick as part of the ((Gabriel Szondy) 'Team Vision' ticket and was reelected. He served until his death in 2007.
