Baker played two seasons in the Thirds, where he was vice-captain in 1952, before making his debut in 1953. He left the club midway through 1954 to join Boolarra before returning in 1955.

A clearance hitch before Round 1, 1955 almost derailed his second Demon debut, with Melbourne officials having to travel to Boolarra the night before the game to organised a clearance.

Despite playing in six straight wins that year it was Baker's last year in VFL football and he was cleared to SANFL side North Adelaide for 1956.

Baker was also a professional foot runner.
