Footscray had beaten Melbourne twelve months before, but in contrast to 1894 the Reds were flying and racked up their fourth straight win of the year to hold a share of top place on the ladder.
Melbourne won the toss, kicked with the breeze and booted four goals in the first term to effectively kill the match off. The ruck division was the main driver to their victory.
Both sides played quick football with a good system, making it one of the best matches of the season so far. The ball went rapidly from one end to the other all day, and with the exception of the first quarter the visitors were the equal of the home team.
Best were McGinis, Moysey and Roche.
