Footscray win by 1 goal

Goalkickers: David Christy 1, James O'Halloran 1

The previous Saturday, against St Kilda Melbourne's poor accuracy in front of goal kept them waiting until the last few minutes of the match to win, and despite starting favourites against Footscray with their best possible side on-field, they kicked themselves out of the game again.

The scores were even at half-time before the 'Scray booted away with two goals. Melbourne pulled one back in the last quarter, and though they would have won under 1897 scoring rules it wasn't good enough in 1894.

Both team's defences came out of the game with credit, but the visitors' forwards were diabolical in converting their chances. In the last 15 minutes they had half a dozen chances to level the game but could not find their range. Four chances came in the last three minutes, the last through Roche who failed as McCarthy and Christy had before him. O'Halloran started the game as a defender, but was sent to rover late in the game and kicked a goal.

They even had the benefit of Footscray's captain playing all but the first five minutes of the game with broken ribs. First gamer Jim McCarthy was poor in front of goal, missing several shots on goal.

Melbourne's best were O'Dea, O'Dwyer and Massey. The club was fined 5p 5s for coming onto the field 20 minutes late.

Notes
A new recruit O'Grady is shown, but this may be another player under a different name.
