The match was played on the same day as a Victoria vs Tasmania clash and didn't attract a big crowd.
Despite being underdogs, Melbourne started with the wind and surprised the locals by attacking first. They wasted two easy chances, and Geelong but their forward play wasn't good enough and they wasted the opportunities. Geelong got the only goal of the first quarter, and won the game with four goals to nil with their use of the breeze before half time.
Harry Orwin suffered a severely dislocated thumb after being kicked while trying to gather the ball. After half time, captain Eddie Fox was given permission to replace him with an unknown player.
